Why nearby stations can disagree
Each gauge measures its own instrument and location. Tributaries, structures, rainfall and the time of observation can produce different readings on the same named river, so compare timestamps and units before comparing values. A change at one station should not be projected onto every place downstream.
A reading is not a warning
Use the Environment Agency warning service for current alerts and safety guidance. This browse page is a monitoring index, not an address-level flood-risk assessment. Historical or delayed readings should never be used as proof that a location is safe.
